San Francisco may be the gayest city on Earth, but that doesn't necessarily make it the safest for gays. LGBTs face a heightened risk of being the victims of violent crime (exhibit A: Three Hayward men who were recently apprehended as they drove around the city shooting gays), a problem compounded by reluctance within the community to report crimes.

Why do so many violent crimes against LGBTs go unreported? Is historical mistrust of the SFPD -- an adversarial relationship lasting decades and reaching its lowest point during the 1979 White Night Riots -- to blame? How can LGBTs keep themselves safe, and how can the SFPD better serve the community? And how has the Castro Patrol affected the pursuit, prosecution, and prevention of crimes?
