How safe are San Francisco Bay beaches and water a year after the Cosco Busan oil spill?

Ba_oil_spill_0271_kr_medium_medium

The container ship Cosco Busan hit the Bay Bridge on the morning of November 7th, spilling some 58,000 gallons of toxic bunker fuel into San Francisco Bay. What was learned from that spill, and how safe are the waters now?

Can people swim in the bay safely? How many birds died and are any still in danger? What precautions have been taken to lessen the chance of another oil spill? And what happened to the captain and crew of the oil tanker that hit the bridge?

How will it help?

This story will help readers learn what has happened since the spill and what precautions have been taken to help ensure it doesn't happen again.

I've been a reporter, copy editor and assigning editor at newspapers for 22 years, most of them in the Bay Area. I was an assistant metro editor at the Contra Costa Times when this spill happened a year ago and worked with reporters on stories during that time.
I will write a 1,000-word story detailing what has happened a year after the oil spill and what lessons were learned, including water safety, beaches, birds and others affected by it. Photos of affected areas will be included.
