I'm kicking off week two in Chile by attending this seminar. Hoping to learn more about the big picture of energy useage and needs in Chile.
Week one was equally full of informative encounters. I met with a representative from Ecosistemas, a Chilean non-government organization that's helping to drive the "Patagonia Sin Represas" (Patagonia Without Dams) campaign.
Andres Gillmore of Corporacion Costa Carrera is the spokesman for the corporation of neighbors living in the Aysen region; I spent three fascinating hours with him listening to the history of the region and energy development in Chile. Today I'm meeting with him again to go to a Chilean BBQ ("asado") for Aysen residents living in Santiago.
Finally, I met with Antonio Horvath Gutierrez, son of a Chilean senator for the Aysen region. Antonio is the president of Aysen Futuro, another regional group dedicated to developing Aysen on Aysen's terms.
A good week for hearing arguments against the dams. This coming week I have meetings arranged with representatives of the developers! Point - meet counterpoint!
Stay tuned.
