San Francisco’s public transit system is in trouble. The system, Muni, is already facing a $23 million deficit just two months into its fiscal year. As it tries to balance its budget, riders are the ones who suffer. On-time performance is stuck at a paltry 72.9 percent, when the voter-mandated goal is 85 percent.
The mayoral race this fall is a point of decision for the city, but candidates have been asked their positions on funding, dedicated transit lanes and Muni overtime.
San Francisco Public Press reporter Jerold Chinn and photographer Steven Rhodes are interviewing some of the San Francisco mayoral candidates on video to discuss all of the issues mentioned above that have been plaguing the transit agency for years.
Each candidate was asked the same seven questions, including follow up questions to some of their answers. Voters will get a chance to see and hear what the mayoral candidates' plans are to improve Muni service and help fund the transit agency if they become mayor on Nov. 8, 2011.
